Introduction: Multiple sclerosis(MS) is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by demyelinated lesions. Therefore, this study investigated the association between the prevalence of GSTT1, GSTM1 and GSTP1 polymorphisms and clinical factors in Tehran residence MS patients.
Method:In this case-control study DNA was extracted from 69 patients and 74 normal subjects blood sample with Roche kit. Genotyping was done using RFLP-PCR and then was visualized by agarose electrophoresis. The correlation between age of onset, EDSS and birth date were analyzed by Graphpad prism software.
Results: Highest EDSS grade was recorded in male subjects (3.5±1.9) and about 30% of the patients were born in June. Although there was not significant correlation between genotyping and gender of the subjects (P value>0.05, OR: 2-40), but the significant correlation between GSTM1 polymorphism and disease age of onset was observed(P-value = 0.009). Smoker subjects with GSTM1 null genotype had higher EDSS range than those with GSTM1 (P-value = 0.03).
Discussion: The critical role of GSTM1 genotype in the detoxification of cigarette products was shown. It was found that GSTM1 polymorphism, is associated with early diagnosis in subjects who are susceptible to the MS disease.
