Pulmonary infection due to Cryptococcus Neoformans in a patient without immunodeficiency: A case report

| Objective: Cryptococcus neoformans is one of the rare infectious agents in lung. The majority of reported cases are among immunodeficient individuals. Case: This is a report of the infection in a 47-year-old male with irritative coughs and marked weight loss. We found nodules in the apical and diaphragmatic lobes of the right lung on X-ray and CT scanning. BK test and cytologic examinations were negative. Regarding the normal results of bronchoscopy, thoracotomy was suggested. The lung biopsy was positive for cryptococcus neoformans. Conclusion: After administration of Ketoconazole for 3 weeks, all of radiologic findings disappeared. The patient improved in 6 months after treatment and no radiographic evidence of infection observed. |
