Abstract:   (10609 Views)
Objective: Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes (NIDDM), is a common disease. There are many factors such as genetic agents, which known as a predisposing factors for incidence of the disease. Methods: To investigate the predisposing factors of NIDDM occurring before the age of 30, in Ghaemshahr and Babol area. 54 NIDDM patients with mean age of onset of diabetes 27±3 years were compared with 54 non-diabetic control patients with a mean age of 26±3 years, and 54 cases of NIDDM as control with a mean age of onset of diabetes 48±11 years for the presence of risk factors with attention to the patient’s sex, family history of diabetes (FH) and body mass index (BMI). Findings: 96% of young NIDDM patients were female, in comparison to the control group (83%) the difference was significant (P<0.025). FH was present in 78% of patients, compared to control (26%), the difference was significant (P<0.001). The mean BMI of patients (26±4.5 kg/m²) was more than of control (23±4 kg/m²), (P<0.001). The odds ratio for the patients with BMI value of 20-25 kg/m². The association between female sex and FH, with risk of NIDDM was strong with relative risk of 6.9 and 5.2 respectively. The difference between NIDDM occurring before and after 30 years of age was significant only for female preponderance in the former (96% vs. 70%, P<0.001). Conclusion: These results show that obesity, FH and female sex are predisposing factors of NIDDM in the youngs.
