Background and Objective: Awareness of the prevalence and associated risk factors of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL) is very important for its prevention and clinical management of that. Therefore, in this study, the frequency of NCCL and the risk factors related to it in the students of Babol Dental School were investigated.
Methods: This observational-analytical study was conducted on 210 babol dental school students. A questionnaire including demographic information and questions related to behavior and nutritional-hygienic habits was provided to the Participants. Then, each student was examined and the teeth were scored based on the Smith and Knight index. The frequency of NCCL based on gender, location and characteristics of the lesion, and their association with the affected jaw, tooth brushing technique, dietary habits, and gastric reflux was investigated.
Findings: Of the 210 students, 22.4% of the participants, had NCCL lesions. The frequency of lesions was not significantly related to gender, involved jaw, type and method of brushing, frequency of eating fruit and pickles and soft drinks, smoking, gastric reflux and dry mouth, but the frequency of lesions in terms of anterior or posterior position and Buccal or lingual had a statistically significant difference (p<0.001 and p=0.001 respectively) and most of the lesions were anterior (61.7%) and buccal (57.4%). Also, the frequency of lesions had a significant relationship with bulimia (p=0.03).
Conclusion: There was no correlation between nutritional hygienic habits and the presence of NCCL. But a significant relationship was observed between bulimia and NCCL. |
