Background and Objective: The World Health Organization (WHO) officially recognized the disease as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Many risk factors, such as age, gender, race and ethnicity, genetics, obesity, and underlying diseases, can affect the severity of COVID-19 symptoms. These factors may also play a role in the development of complications. Race is considered a major risk factor. The aim of this study was to compare the severity of pulmonary involvement in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in the Arab and Bakhtiari ethnic groups.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 396 people infected with COVID-19 in the sixth wave of Corona with the Omicron strain with pulmonary complications, in the two Arab and Bakhtiari ethnic groups, regardless of the outcome of their hospitalization, who referred to Razi Hospital in Ahvaz in 1400. In this study, the severity of pulmonary involvement in CT scan images of COVID-19 patients as mild, moderate, and severe and its relationship with the ethnicity of the patients were evaluated and compared.
Findings: In this study, 396 patients were studied, 189 of whom were Bakhtiari and 189 of whom were Arab. A significant difference was observed between ethnicities and the severity of pulmonary involvement. The severity of mild, moderate, and severe pulmonary involvement was 81, 49, and 68 in the Bakhtiari group, and 78, 70, and 50 in the Arab group, respectively (p=0.03). The mean age of the mild pulmonary involvement group was 40.91±16.18 years, moderate pulmonary involvement was 47.95±16.53 years, and severe pulmonary involvement was 48.33±16.24 years (p<0.001).
Conclusion: The results of the study showed that Bakhtiari people experienced a higher incidence of severe pulmonary involvement due to COVID-19 compared to Arab patients.
