Abstract:   (16 Views)
Background and Objective: Sleep disorders in children are prevalent and can negatively affect growth and development. Recent studies have suggested a potential link between sleep disorders and dental caries. This study aimed to explore the association between sleep disorders and dental caries index.
Methods: In this observational-analytical study, 224 children aged 7 to 12 years, who visited the School of Dentistry clinic, participated. Data were gathered using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), completed by parent. This questionnaire consists of 33 items in eight different subscales: bedtime resistance, sleep-onset delay, sleep duration, sleep anxiety, night wakings, parasomnias, sleep-disordered breathing,  and day time sleepiness. Clinical examinations were conducted to assess the children's dental caries status, with DMFT/deft indices recorded.
Findings: The prevalence of sleep disorders in the study population was 89.7%, and the mean DMFT/dmft index was 5.63±3.67. No significant statistical correlation was found between DMFT/dmft index and any of the sleep problem domains, except for sleep anxiety (p=0.04). Additionally, no significant associations were observed between bruxism, parental education level, dental caries index, and sleep problems.
Conclusion: The prevalence of sleep disorders was notably high and associations was found between the dental caries index and sleep anxiety.
