The Perspectives of Medical Students at Babol University of Medical Sciences on Artificial Intelligence

Background and Objective: Artificial intelligence (AI) and its related technologies are having significant impacts in various medical fields. Familiarity with AI applications in medical education has the potential to advance healthcare systems and empower future generations of medical professionals. This study aimed to assess the application of AI in medicine, along with its benefits and concerns, from the perspective of medical students at Babol University of Medical Sciences.
Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 117 medical students at Babol University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected through a questionnaire administered both virtually and in person. The first section of the questionnaire contained demographic information, and the second section assessed the application, benefits, and concerns related to AI, consisting of 12, 15, and 6 items, respectively. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics with SPSS 27.
Findings: According to the results, 41% of participants were female, and 59% were male. The average age of the participants was 24.12±3.86 years. The findings indicated that the most important application of AI in medical sciences, according to the medical students, was "training and educating medical students" (3.98±1.02). The most significant benefit and concern, according to the students, were the items "AI can address many weaknesses in current medicine" (71%) and "There is a risk of confidential patient information being leaked by some individuals or hackers" (80%).
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that, from the perspective of medical students, the greatest advantage of using artificial intelligence is addressing the shortcomings of current medical practice, while the main concern is the potential disclosure of patients' confidential information by certain individuals. |
