Background and Objective: Root canal treatment involves removing micro-organisms and diseased tissues from inside the root canal and filling the space with materials to prevent or treat the periapical area. If the microorganisms survive and grow inside the canal and spread to the periapical tissues of the tooth, they can result in root canal treatment failure. Impenetrable flooding of the root canal is the main factor in the success of root canal treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the microleakage of canals filled with MTA, cold ceramic, gutta-percha and AH26 sealer using dye penetration method.
Methods: In this experimental-laboratory study, 64 human maxillary central teeth that were recently extracted were prepared and shaped, and the canals were randomly divided into three experimental groups (18 samples in each group) and two control groups (5 samples in each group). The canals were filled using the materials used according to the factory instructions, and the last three millimeters were filled using a temporary dressing. After a week of incubation in 100% humidity and 37 degrees, the samples were immersed in methylene blue for 4 days and the amount of dye penetration was measured.
Findings: The average microleakage in the three investigated groups had a statistically significant difference, the highest amount of microleakage (6 mm) was observed in the gutta-percha and AH26 sealer group, and the lowest amount was observed in the cold ceramic group (0 mm). The results showed that the average amount of microleakage was 1.21±0.94 mm in the cold ceramic group, 1.55±1.19 mm in the MTA group, and 2.33±1.71 mm in the gutta-percha and AH26 sealer group. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups of cold ceramic, gutta-percha and AH26 sealer (p<0.05), but there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups of MTA and cold ceramic, as well as between MTA and gutta-percha and AH26 sealer.
Conclusion: Cold ceramic and MTA are better filling materials compared to gutta-percha and AH26 sealer. |
