The Effect of Iranian Propolis on Oral Mucositis Induced by X-Ray Irradiation in Rats

Background and Objective: Ionizing radiation in the treatment of head and neck cancers causes destructive effects on the oral mucosa; the most common complication of cancer therapy is oral mucositis. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Iranian propolis as a natural substance on the prevention and treatment radiotherapy- induced mucositis in rats.
Methods: In this experimental study, 48 adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: the saline group (C), the propolis-treated group (P, receiving 400 mg/kg), the propolis and X-ray radiation group (PR, receiving 400 mg/kg), and the saline and X-ray radiation group (SR). Groups PR and SR were exposed to 15 Gy of X-ray radiation. Rats received daily intraperitoneal injections of propolis (groups P and PR). The severity of oral mucositis was evaluated using the Parkins scale after radiation until day 10. On days 5 and 10, histopathological samples from the middle third of the rats' tongues were collected and analyzed.
Findings: The severity of mucositis increased in all groups from day 1 to day 10, but it was significantly lower in the PR group compared to the SR group on days 4, 6 and 10 (p<0.001). Histopathological changes in irradiated groups were significantly more severe than in non-irradiated groups (p<0.001). Additionally, the SR group exhibited the lowest body weight compared to the other groups on day 10 (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, Iranian propolis appears to be effective in the treatment and management of radiation-induced mucositis. It is recommended as a suitable therapeutic option for alleviating mucositis symptoms and reducing oral lesions. |
