Prevalence of Dental Trauma in Patients with Head and Neck Trauma Referred to Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Babol in a Year

Background and Objective: Dental trauma is one of the most important problems related to general dental health. The aim of this study is to investigate traumatic dental injuries and how to follow up their treatment in patients with head and neck trauma who referred Shahid Beheshti Hospital.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 81 patients with dental trauma resulting from head and neck trauma who referred to the emergency department of Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Babol from October 2022 to September 2023. Patients were evaluated in terms of age, gender, cause of injury, number of damaged permanent teeth, classification of dental injury according to Ellis and Saunders, and type of treatment performed.
Findings: A total of 192 teeth with 231 dental trauma were studied in 81 patients, including 61 males and 20 females. There were 2.4 damaged teeth and 2.8 dental trauma for each study patient. The highest incidence of trauma was seen in the left maxillary central tooth left (19.5%). The most common types of trauma in this study were crown fractures (29%) and subluxation (22.9%). accidents (driving a car) with a frequency 22.9%, accidents (pedestrians) with a frequency of 18.6% and accidents (motorcycle rider without a helmet) with an abundance 17.7% were the most common causes of injury. Out of a total of 81 patients, 21 patients went to the dentist for follow-up treatment up to ten days after the trauma and 29 patients up to one month after the dental trauma, and 52 patients did not follow up the complete treatment of their dental trauma.
Conclusion: The results of the study showed that the most common type of injury overall was a crown fracture and the most common cause of injury was traffic accidents. |
