The effect of family centered care on mothers, attachment with premature infants Hospitalizaed to the neonatal intensive care unit

Background: Parents of premature infants experience high tension and sense of hopelessness in the neonatal intensive care unit; Which often lack adequate knowledge of what their parental role play and interact with children during hospitalization.

Methods: This clinical trial study, sample consisted of 70 mothers of premature infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Motahari hospital in Jahrom city that were selected randomly  in two experimental groups and control group. Family-centered care is a behavioral training multistage educational program at each step, information on the care of premature infants was instructed by the researcher. The mother infant attachment was measured after the intervention using the maternal and  neonatal behaviors Avant tool. Data analysis was performed using student t tests  by SPSS software version 16.

Results: The results show that in the experimental group of attachment based on emotional behavior, proximity and care was higher than the control group; So that the attachment score average is on the basis of emotional behavior, proximity and care in the intervention group, respectively 25/3±5/1, 22/3 ± 4/9 and 15/1 ± 3/5 in the control group received 14/ 1 ± 4/2, 13/2 ± 3/3 and 10/5 ± 3/60. According to independent t test, the difference is significant between the two groups in terms of these variables.

Conclusion: The results of this research showed that education and family-centered care can be a tremendous impact positively on the formation process of attachment in mothers of premature infants hospitalized in neonatal intensive care.
